“I co-slept with my baby.”
Sandra D. lost her baby boy, Dylan, to SIDS in 2014. She shares her story below.
Hi, my name is Sandra. I have a 13 year old and in 2014, we welcomed our angel Dylan into our lives. Everything was going great. He seemed normal.
The 8th morning I woke up for a feeding at 3-ish. Usually he slept in is bassinet, but that morning I left him beside me (between my hubby and I) and went back to sleep. As millions of parents do, I co-slept with my baby.
Sadly, that morning I woke up to my angel not breathing. We started CPR and called 911. Sadly my angel was gone.
What did you know about SIDS before you lost your child?
I knew it happened. I didn’t think it would happen to me. You know, these things only happen to other people.
What do you wish you had known sooner?
About over-heating babies, soft mattresses and other risk factors.
Are there any SIDS support groups or resources you’d recommend to other parents who have lost a child?
I didn’t use any myself. But I know there are some on Facebook. And the PAIL Network (Pregnancy and Infant Loss) is also great.
Is there anything other parents can do to help spread awareness about SIDS?
Talk about it. Remind people about the risk.
